A List of Little Things

(Texto em português, a seguir)
You know when life seems to be put on hold and you get frustrated by it? Or when something you thought to be good for you, turns out to be an emotional roller coaster and sometimes, even a disappointment? That's how I'm feeling. I am disappointed. In reality, deep down, everything is fine but sometimes I get lost with what's on the surface. It happens to all of us, I guess. However, there's always something shining through and today I've decided to count the little things that made me smile lately, little random actions that helped me to go through the days and reminders not to be too harsh on myself:
  1. It's the edge of Autumn, sweater weather and coziness;
  2. Strangers complementing me on my blue hair and just being nice;
  3. A serene lady hugging a tree on an early morning (everybody with their heads down going to work and there she was,completely isolated from that world);
  4. People criticizing positively my paintings (and people seeing more my paintings);
  5. Finding out more new books to read;
  6. Cats longing for my lap;
  7. Accidentally coming across with one of mine favorite shows from my childhood on YouTube;
  8. Christmas decorations;
  9. Vegan pizza and roasted sweet potato... lots of it;
  10. Friends;
  11. The movie premiere 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to find Them': the magic has returned!;
  12. A new tattoo (I'll take a picture later when it's completely healed);
And so many other little lovely things that are there to not let me get lost and, which I'm so grateful for. This post is really a light reading but I hope you like it nevertheless.

Lots of Love,
Helena

É assim que me tenho sentido ultimamente: desiludida.
  1. É o auge do outono, o tempo das camisolas  fofas e conforto;
  2. Elogios de estranhos em relação ao meu cabelo azul e simplesmente, a serem simpáticos;
  5. Encontrar novos livros para ler;
  6. Gatos a quererem colo;
  7. Acidentalmente, redescobrir uma das minhas séries favoritas de infância,no YouTube;
  8. Decorações de Natal;
  9. Pizza vegan e batata doce assada no forno... montes de batata doce;
  10. Amigos;

Helena

New Illustrations

Hello everyone!
This is going to be a small post: just passing to leave here sneak peeks of some new illustrations. It's amazing how fulfilled I feel every time I get one done and this week I had some days off from work so I could finish some and start new ones. I spent these days, basically, on my pajamas, in my bedroom amongst candles, tea and music and with a cat on my lap, precious elements to art. When I was not painting I was wandering through gardens and looking for delicious food with friends. It's September and that magical time of the year is approaching fast and I want to do as many illustrations Autumn related as possible. From little animals to witchy characters, I want to draw them all.
I couldn't resist and I did my own character in the wizarding world of Harry Potter, so I traveled to Hogwarts for some days and I took Pumpkin Muffin with me, the ginger cat.
So here it, some snaps from Instagram from the last days and new illustrations :)
Hope you enjoy them!

Lots of Love,
Helena

Helena

Clérigos, Oporto and the new Harry Potter's book

Some weeks ago, a friend and I decided to loose our heads (and our love for money) and travel almost 275km from Lisbon to Oporto just to attend the world launching of the sixth new book of Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling (as if you don't know enough the author) on the 31st July by midnight. It was a small, crazy adventure considering we returned home the day right after but our tired, bored spirits were in much need of new sights, different people, delicious food, pasteries and some magic.
Heavens, it was worth it. The all scenery around Clérigos really does seem something taken out of Harry Potter's books: Tiny old houses upon tiny old houses and shops, old and new amongst other completely different magnificent buildings made of stone in narrow streets, made us feel we were in the middle of Diagon Alley. Even the weather helped to create that atmosphere of the wizarding world of HP. It was chilly, grey and humid, almost raining - perfect for me.
We arrived by train, at the beautiful São Bento's Train Station and we still had lots of time to spend until midnight so, after checked in at our hotel, we headed straight to some traditional pastry shop and stuffed ourselves with a sinful, highly caloric and sugary pastry typical from Oporto and after that we just explored the surroundings - we couldn't go that far anyway, we just had about 8 hours until the launching. As such we just wandered through the old streets and admired buildings and shops. We even found a lovely vegan/vegetarian restaurant near our hotel to dinner which was really lucky because, sometimes it gets difficult to find this type of restaurants without having to walk an entire town.
With full, happy bellies we finally went to Lello's Bookshop.
Lello's Bookshop is one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world: with 110 years old is truly magical, it's from another world and era. I can't describe it and sadly, I couldn't take a single decent photo. We waited almost two more hours after midnight - and we were already in the line since 10pm - to get into the bookshop and once inside we were told to hurry up and to go straight to the book, and besides that, it was dark and the lightning was not ideal. I'll leave it here, nevertheless, a couple of photos so you get the idea, just bear in mind that these are not my photos, I just found them somewhere on Google. You can see why J.K. Rowling got inspired by this bookshop, in fact Dumbledoor's office was inspired from it.
With that said, it was a bit disappointing as I really, really wanted to see properly the bookshop and the waiting was really tiring in spite of all the entertainment arranged for the HP fans, (pointless for me because I'm short and I had thousands of muggles around me) but what I saw from that little area of Oporto, Clérigos, was magical and totally fit for the launching of the sixth book of 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child'.
Books in our hands, we returned to the hotel and all I could think of was a good night sleep and, hopefully get the enough hours of it until the sunrise and then return to our homes.
I can't describe much of our journey to Oporto and the launch but I still hope you can imagine and feel what I felt whilst roaming those streets with a single purpose on my mind - return to my child years and believe, once more, in magic (here between us, I never stopped believing).

Lots of Love,
Helena

Valeu a pena.

Helena

Traveling: Douro, Portugal

Sometimes you just need to take a break and fly from reality and not worry about what is left behind. Many times you wish to do it and few are those times that you actually decide to do it. So, when I was invited to do a two days trip to the north of the country with my family I thought, 'why not?' The route was quite simple: spending the night in a hotel and leaving early in the morning to do another small trip to a tourist boat that would take us through the waters of the beautiful Douro.
The weather was quite nasty, the whole journey to the north was made under buckets of water, but the view on the other side of the bus window was amazing. Mountains and mountains of green and sometimes, huge perfectly rounded rocks with hints of river here and there, grazing fields and old stone houses.
At the end of the first day we arrived at our hotel, which was in fact, a XVII century old convent converted into a four stars rustic hotel, the Hotel Rural Nossa Senhora Do Carmo, located between Douro and Serra da Estrela. Everything was picturesque: the eating area was in, what was once, a church with the buffet placed in the altar and all that lightened with soft light - some corners were really shady, in a beautiful way - and we had live music during dinner time. It was a pleasant and relaxing moment and it made the perfect beginning for the night. I'm not going to talk about the bedroom cause it was a simple room with antique furniture, however the windows were fantastic! They were enormous and the windowsills were so large and long that I even thought for a moment sleeping on one of them and just gaze at the night sky whilst I fell asleep; even the bathtub was placed under one of those windows. I really was tired and sleepy so I chose the comfy white bed instead.

Unfortunately, our staying was brief: we got up really early, with the bedroom's phone ringing as an alarm at 5am so I didn't explore the hotel and it surroundings as I wanted to. It was a two hour trip to the boat, hence the early waking time.
When we arrived to the boat, we were served both breakfast and, later lunch. The rest of the day was spent on the boat with only the river, the mountains and its vineyards for company. Besides the blissful view, we also passed through barrages, it was quite a phenomenon: grand and slightly scary at the same time. The all Douro is just beautiful and peaceful, I can't find better adjectives to describe it. I hope the pictures can show you a bit of the experience.
I loved getting to know Douro, despite the fact that it was all done in a bit of a rush, to be honest. The tranquillity of that view, however was a much needed soothing balm for me; I was able to disconnect, even if just temporarily, from the stress and obligations I usually find myself in.

You can find more information about the hotel here :)

Midsummer...a New Chapter (oh...and blue hair!)

It's been a while, again, since I returned to Dreams and Teacups because....well...life happens. I was on standby mode since this year started due to important, difficult decisions I had to make and with that, free time was short. It still is; however, I must work on my motivation and on what makes me happy and, more important, work on things that can take me further in life. The need of building something solid, positive and real that belongs truly to me is becoming bigger than ever - that satisfaction and fulfillment at the end of the day. Routine can distract us quite easily from our goals, don't you think? I must add, though: those difficult decisions payed off.
Here I am, nevertheless and even if I don't have new illustrations to show this time, I surely have some good, happy snaps of my day to day to share on the blog. Actually, I did have some awesome moments, from good food and friends, walks in greenhouses, to my birthday and...Florence and the Machine's concert (she's brilliant, a goddess, really)!
As I'm not having much free time, the least I can do is make the most out of the simple, daily moments with my loved ones (and relax whenever I can,with cats and books).
Plus...did I mention I have blue hair? I wanted to do something like this for so long but I wanted to make sure of what was going to work best for me, hair, skin tone, maintenance, etc. So, blue hair it is and I'm loving it. People stare at me a bit, which is annoying but it doesn't bother me that much now.
Anyway, weekend is knocking at our doors and I have some illustrations on my mind that I can't wait to transfer onto paper. So, it's going to be a weekend of art for me, with tea, cake, cats and some series to catch up and, who knows, enjoy some sun.
What about you, do you also feel that routine can, sometimes, steal your creativity? What do you do to simplify your tasks through the day and still have time and energy to do what you really love? I would love to hear from you! Happy weekend!

Lots of Love, Helena
